Asyraf replaces Ahmad as Umno secretary-general

JOHOR BARU: Former Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has been appointed as the new Umno secretary-general, replacing Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

This was announced by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at a press conference after chairing the first meeting of the Umno supreme council for 2023-2026 at Menara Dato’ Onn, World Trade Centre here yesterday.

The Deputy Prime Minister also announced that Pengerang MP and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is the new information chief replacing Isham Jalil, while Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor retained his post as treasurer-general.

Ahmad won a supreme council seat and the Pontian division chief’s post during the party elections held on March 18.

Tan Sri Shahrizat Jalil has been appointed to the Umno supreme council despite losing in her bid to regain the Wanita chief’s post.

She lost to incumbent Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad.

Besides Shahrizat, others appointed to the supreme council included Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

The two had vied unsuccessfully for a vice-president’s post in the party polls.

The victorious vice-presidents are Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Higher Education Minister and Johor Umno chief Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin and Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

Ahmad Zahid and Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan remained Umno president and deputy president respectively for the 2023/2026 term. This follows a decision by the Umno general assembly for the top two posts to be uncontested.
