KUALA LUMPUR: Despite its dismal performance in the last two general elections, Umno is still popular and relevant in the country's political landscape.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this was reflected in the increase in the number of new members enrolled by the party this year.

As of June 6, Asyraf said Umno has a total of 3,442,280 members from 22,125 branches in 191 divisions around the country. The figure, he said, included 13,442 new members who joined the party between Jan 1 and June 6 this year.

"Although Umno is often being labelled as the third choice party... unpopular or not accepted by the younger generation, the party still managed to increase the number of members," he said in his speech at the 2023 Umno General Assembly here today.

According to statistics, Asyraf said Sabah recorded the highest number of members with 604,328 people followed by Johor with 455,125 members, Selangor (432,030 members) and Kedah (302,939 members).
